Steel is very often used for furniture frames and components. It is cheap, it can be used for many purposes and it comes in many different qualities, from the cheapest merchant steel to very strong refined spring steel.
Steel is available in a large variety of profile forms and sizes and compared to aluminium and stainless steel, steel provides a whole spectrum of possibilities when it comes to design and shaping.
To make it corrosion-resistant it is almost always necessary to surface-treat steel. There are numerous surface treatments to choose from: lacquering, metallization i.e. chrome plating, nickel plating (also in colours), galvanization, burning etc.
