Rolling is a process conducting a sheet through 3, or sometimes 4, rotating rollers. On account of the rotation of the rollers, the sheet will be conducted through the rollers and will therefore be deformed in a circular shape. Mechanically, rolling is a simple function, and the reciprocal position of the rollers, which can be adjusted either manually or by a motor, determines how much the sheet is deformed, i.e. the size of the radius achieved for the sheet.
Cylindrical workpieces (such as barrels) or other round shapes such as rounded plates for protective machine guards or designed plates can be made by way of rolling.
Rolling is typically combined with turret punching or bending-off pressing such as a rolled, perforated plates with bend flanges.
GBI (Gl. Bedsted industri A/S) can roll sheets in a thickness of 2 (2.5 mm) in lengths up to 2 m and with a min. roller radius of 130 mm. Smaller roller radii can be made in a bending-off press with so-called step-bends which are many small bends with a small distance between each bend.
